Error: Cannot start Jet Engine

SoundHound requires the Microsoft Data Access Objects (DAO) components in order to function. These components can be installed on their own, or along with Simian as an option. When there is a problem installing the DAO components or one of its components gets damaged the error "Cannot Start Jet Engine" is generated upon execution of SoundHound (which is automatically started when Simian or WaveCart is opened).

Reinstalling Simian

In order to repair this error, the first step is to reinstall Simian using the "Update" option (as shown in Figure 1) and be sure to check the option to install the DAO components.

If reinstalling Simian doesn't solve the issue, download the Microsoft DAO Components directly from Microsoft (Click Here to go directly to the download page). Once you have completed either of these steps, Sound hound should launch properly, allowing you to add your audio folders for Simian to access. If the error still occurs, proceed to the "Manual Installation" section.

Manual Installation

In extream cases, the installation and registration of dao350.dll is blocked, either by anti-virus software or by Windows its self usually because a newer version of the DAO components exist. SoundHound requires the 3.50 version specifically as newer versions are not backwards compatable.

To manually install this component perform the folowing steps:

  1. The dao350.dll file must be manually copied from another workstation to the folowing directory:

C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\DAO (if another machine is not available, contact BSI Support to obtain a copy).

  2. After saving the file to the proper location, go to the Windows Start menu and choose Run regsvr32 "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\DAO\dao350.dll" as shown in Figure 2.
    regsvr32 'C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\DAO\dao350.dll'

  3. Then click OK which will give the message as shown in Figure 2.
